Jennifer Hudson gave Broadway fans a special treat when she made an unexpected appearance at the hit musical Smash on May 15 at New York City’s Imperial Theatre.
The EGOT-winning star, who famously starred in the second season of the 2012 TV series that inspired the show, stepped onto the stage to celebrate the cast and share a heartfelt moment with the audience.
Known for her powerhouse voice and magnetic presence, Hudson performed a few lines from “I Can’t Let Go,” a song originally written for her character on the TV series by acclaimed songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
After the cast—led by Robyn Hurder and Caroline Bowman—received their bows, Shaiman and Wittman introduced Hudson, who energized the crowd with her enthusiasm.
“Was that not an amazing show?” she asked. She praised the cast for their incredible performances, telling them, “Each and every one of you are a star. I’m so inspired to be a small part of this.”
Hudson’s surprise visit came after she missed the musical’s April 10 premiere due to filming commitments in Los Angeles for her self-titled talk show. In an Instagram post at the time, she expressed regret about not being at opening night but sent love and support to the cast and crew.
The Smash musical, directed by Tony Award-winner Susan Stroman, brings to life fan-favorite songs from the original series, such as “The 20th Century Fox Mambo” and the Emmy-nominated “Let Me Be Your Star.”
The show follows the backstage drama of a fictional Marilyn Monroe musical called Bombshell, starring Hurder as Ivy Lynn and Bowman as Karen Cartwright.
Currently nominated for two Tony Awards, Smash has captivated Broadway audiences with its thrilling performances and intricate storytelling. Jennifer Hudson’s surprise stage moment only added to the excitement surrounding this star-studded production.
Broadway lovers can look forward to more unforgettable nights as Smash continues its run at the Imperial Theatre.
