David Johansen Of The New York Dolls Battles Stage 4 Cancer

by Coco

David Johansen, the iconic frontman of the New York Dolls, is facing a challenging health crisis, as he battles Stage 4 cancer and a brain tumor. For the past five years, Johansen has been privately enduring significant health struggles, but the situation worsened after a fall in November, which left him bedridden with two broken vertebrae. This fall has further compounded his condition, requiring constant care and putting a heavy strain on his finances.

To help support Johansen during this difficult time, the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund has launched the David Johansen Fund, a fundraiser to assist with his physical therapy, full-time nursing care, and daily living expenses. The initiative aims to help Johansen regain mobility and some level of independence as he continues his battle against cancer. In addition, a special David Johansen T-shirt has been designed, with all proceeds from the shirt dedicated to his medical expenses.

In a statement, Johansen expressed his gratitude for the support but also his struggle with the ongoing health challenges: “We’ve been living with my illness for a long time, still having fun, seeing friends and family, carrying on, but this tumble the day after Thanksgiving really brought us to a whole new level of debilitation. This is the worst pain I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. I’ve never been one to ask for help, but this is an emergency. Thank you.”

The Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, a nonprofit organization founded in 1994 by Victoria Williams after her own diagnosis with multiple sclerosis, has a long history of supporting musicians facing health crises. Aric Steinberg, Executive Director of the Fund, expressed the organization’s commitment to Johansen’s recovery, stating, “Sweet Relief is honored to help David and his family during this difficult time in their lives. His influence on the musical landscape with the New York Dolls is indelible, and his career as an actor and artist has touched many people around the world. We’re here to help him back up with the support of his family, friends, and the wider community of fans.”

Johansen’s career has left a lasting impact on both music and pop culture. As the frontman of the New York Dolls, he helped shape the punk movement, and his solo career, particularly his Buster Poindexter persona, brought him mainstream success, including a hit with “Hot Hot Hot.” He also appeared in the 1988 film Scrooged, playing the memorable role of the Ghost of Christmas Past.

After reuniting with the New York Dolls in 2004, Johansen continued to tour and record with the band until its disbandment in 2011. Following the passing of guitarist Sylvain Sylvain in 2021, Johansen remains the last surviving member of the original lineup. His life and career were celebrated in the 2022 documentary Personality Crisis: One Night Only, directed by Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi.

As Johansen fights for his health, his family and fans are coming together to ensure he receives the support he needs during this critical time.
