Selena Gomez opened up about how weight-related comments make her feel “a tad bitter,” explaining that these kinds of remarks are often directed at women, while “nobody cares about these things with men.”
In a candid conversation with fiancé Benny Blanco, 37, on the March 24 episode of the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, the Only Murders in the Building star, 32, shared her thoughts on body image and the intense scrutiny women face about their appearance. “This isn’t news to anybody—women have a lot more intense feelings about their looks,” Gomez admitted.
As she prepares for public appearances, she confessed, “When I get ready for an event, 90 percent of the time I’m just thinking, ‘I hope I can take the picture and sit down.’” Although she tries to avoid reading internet comments, Gomez admitted, “So many different things pop up in my face that I can’t help but see… I fall victim to looking at things.”
Referring to her identity, Gomez revealed the additional pressures she faces: “It’s not just my weight; it’s also the judgment about who I am—like, not being white enough or Mexican enough. But no one cares about these things when it comes to men.”
Gomez also touched on how the fluctuating weight caused by her chronic autoimmune disorder, lupus, contributes to her vulnerability to online comments. “I would rather be healthy and take care of myself,” she said. “My medications are important, and I believe they’re what helps me. I’m not a model, and I never will be. I think they’re awesome, but I’m definitely not that.”
At the time of the interview, Gomez shared that she had removed social media from her phone. “I’m human, and sometimes I read things, but I do try to ignore most of it. I don’t have anything on my phone at the moment. So, there are ways to combat it,” she said.
Despite the pressure, Selena Gomez emphasized, “I’m not saying I hate it; I understand the power of social media, but it’s tricky.”
