Jessica Simpson surprised fans with a brand-new hair color during the season 23 finale of American Idol on May 18. The 43-year-old singer showed off a fresh dirty blonde look with sun-kissed highlights, a change she trusted longtime hairstylist Rita Hazan to create.
Hazan told PEOPLE it took about two hours to achieve the new “desert sunset blonde” shade, which she describes as “more natural” and “like a kid on the beach.” To keep the color shiny and smooth, they used Glaze’s Supergloss in the shade Vanilla Lights to tone down any brassiness.
Jessica “loved” the new look, says Hazan, who added, “She always had a super buttery blonde – this time we wanted something new and youthful.” The updated style fits Jessica’s fresh vibe as she moves forward after her split from Eric Johnson earlier this year. Hazan said, “It’s a fresh and young vibe, but with confidence and a slight attitude to represent her mood.”
The two have a close bond. Hazan shared, “We usually have a hair party in her bathroom every six weeks, catching up and laughing hysterically. It’s always a fun, personal time.”
Jessica has been busy lately, releasing her EP Nashville Canyon and launching a new Walmart collection inspired by her country roots. She told PEOPLE, “Style evolves as I do, through each stage of my life,” and she finds inspiration everywhere-from vintage wallpaper to old documentaries.
In recent months, Jessica has also wowed fans with bold fashion moments, like her chic airport look in Austin and a surprise performance at Texas’s Luck Reunion festival, where she rocked a leopard-print dress and lots of turquoise jewelry.
