Kendrick Lamar‘s Super Bowl LIX halftime show on February 9, 2025, was filled with thought-provoking references to American history, and filmmaker Spike Lee is highlighting one in particular. The legendary director took to Instagram to praise Lamar’s performance, noting the rapper’s nod to the historical term “40 acres and a mule.”
This term refers to a broken promise made after the Civil War, when Union General William Tecumseh Sherman proposed reparations for formerly enslaved African Americans, offering land and resources for economic independence. The promise was never fulfilled, and Lee celebrated Lamar’s shoutout, which has been the name of Lee’s production company since his time at NYU’s Graduate Film School.
Lamar’s halftime performance included a powerful moment where he rapped, “40 acres and a mule / this is bigger than the music. They tried to rig the game / but you can’t fake influence.” This reference not only honored the historical significance of the term but also served as a commentary on the struggle for racial justice and equity.
The performance also featured symbolic imagery, including dancers forming an American flag while turning their backs to one another, and Samuel L. Jackson, dressed as Uncle Sam, providing commentary throughout.
Spike Lee’s shoutout and Lamar’s performance offered a powerful moment of reflection on Black history and the ongoing fight for reparations and equality.
