Kelsea Ballerini found herself in a challenging spot on The Voice during the March 17 episode, where she had to make a tough decision after the battle round performance of Miley Cyrus‘ “Angels Like You” by contestants Alanna Lynise and Brook Wood.
With both singers bringing their unique strengths to the stage, Ballerini turned to coach Adam Levine for reassurance before making her final call.
The battle performance left the coaches divided, with Michael Bublé praising the chemistry between the two contestants. “You guys are so cute together,” Bublé said, highlighting Alanna’s sweet, breathy voice and Brook’s powerful clarity, ultimately leaning towards Brook as the battle’s winner.
John Legend, while loving the tone of both singers, pointed out some pitch issues but appreciated the distinctiveness of their voices. “Brook, your voice is so powerful,” he noted, but also shared a preference for Alanna’s tone.
Levine expressed his admiration for both contestants. After reflecting on Alanna’s blind audition, Levine praised her but also acknowledged Brook’s powerful voice as a “huge surprise.” Despite the praise, Levine admitted that the decision was difficult, which left Ballerini needing some guidance.
When it was her turn to make the decision, Ballerini, clearly torn, shared her thoughts. “Alanna, your voice… there’s so much nuance to it,” she said. However, she also praised Brook’s powerhouse presence. After a moment of reflection, Ballerini chose to keep Alanna, feeling her nuanced voice was a better fit for her style and the support she could provide.
In a heart-to-heart after the decision, Levine reassured Ballerini, applauding her care and passion for her team. “You shouldn’t be discouraged when you go home,” he encouraged her, reminding her that her time on the show was valuable and should be used to build momentum.
Before settling back into their seats, Ballerini asked Levine if he would have made the same choice. “1000%,” Levine affirmed, giving Ballerini the reassurance she needed.
As The Voice continues, the battles will roll on Monday, March 24 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
