Houston rapper Sauce Walka is recovering after being shot in Memphis in what police are calling a “targeted attack.” The incident, which took place on the afternoon of March 22 near a Memphis hotel, left another man dead, sending shockwaves through the hip-hop community.
Memphis Police confirmed they responded to the shooting around 2:42 p.m. local time. While they have yet to release the victims’ identities, Walka’s father, Albert Walker, confirmed that the 34-year-old rapper was shot in the thigh but is expected to survive.
“Had it not been for God, my son would’ve been dead,” his father told Houston’s KHOU.
TMZ also identified Walka as the surviving victim, while rumors circulated on social media suggesting that another Houston rapper, Sayso P, was the one killed.
Authorities have described the shooting as “not a random act of violence,” emphasizing that the suspects and victims knew each other. According to police, a white vehicle pulled up outside the location, multiple shooters exited, fired shots without warning, then fled the scene.
Memphis PD is actively investigating, using downtown surveillance footage to track down the suspects. Meanwhile, fans and fellow artists, including NFL star C.J. Gardner-Johnson, have been sending their prayers and condolences via social media.
Walka, known for hits like Texas Cyclone and Where Was You At, has worked with big names like Megan Thee Stallion and Travis Scott. The rapper broke his silence on March 23, reposting Gardner-Johnson’s message, which read, “God please cover us in these dark days.”
With police still searching for the shooters, the hip-hop world is left shaken, mourning a loss while hoping for Walka’s full recovery.
