Dawn Robinson, Former En Vogue Star, Opens Up About Her Homelessness And Life In Her Car

Dawn Robinson, the iconic voice behind En Vogue’s biggest hits, has revealed a shocking personal struggle in a recent YouTube video.

In a heartfelt confession, the 58-year-old former member of the legendary ‘90s R&B girl group shared with fans that she has been homeless for the past three years, living out of her car.

“I’ve been living in my car for the last three years,” Robinson said in the emotional video posted on March 11. “I said it, oh my gosh, it’s out.” The revelation comes as a surprise to many of her fans, who remember her as a powerhouse singer who was part of one of the most successful girl groups of all time.

In the video, Robinson opened up about how her journey began. She was living with her parents in Las Vegas when, in 2020, she decided to make a change. Encouraged by her former manager, she moved to Los Angeles with hopes of finding a new start.

Unfortunately, her plans took an unexpected turn when the living situation with her manager fell apart, leading her to spend eight months in a hotel.

“Sometimes people want to trap you and keep you in a situation where you’re vulnerable and depending on them,” Robinson explained. “So I got out of there.” After the hotel experience, Robinson found herself exploring an alternative lifestyle – “car life” – and, as she describes it, instantly fell in love with the freedom it provided.

“I felt free,” Robinson shared, recalling how she was drawn to the idea of living on the road, which led her to Malibu, California. “It felt like I was on a camping trip. It just felt like the right thing to do.”

The former En Vogue singer clarified that her decision to share her story isn’t to garner sympathy but to highlight her personal growth.

“I’m learning about who I am. I’m learning myself as a person, as a woman,” she said, noting that despite missing her family and loved ones, she needed this experience for her own self-discovery.

Tragically, she also revealed the passing of her dog Max during this time, underscoring just how isolating her journey has been.

Robinson ended the video with an empowering message for her followers: “Be spontaneous. Do the scary. F— fear,” encouraging others to embrace the unknown.

She expressed pride in what she has accomplished during these difficult years, acknowledging that although she wishes she had an apartment, she’s proud of the independence she’s gained.

Dawn Robinson was a founding member of En Vogue, and her powerful voice helped catapult the group to fame in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Known for hits like “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” and “Free Your Mind,” Robinson’s musical legacy remains strong.

After leaving En Vogue in 1997, she ventured into a solo career and acting, appearing in films and TV shows, including the first season of R&B Divas: Los Angeles.
