Green Day took home the Alternative Artist of the Year award at the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards, but it was their acceptance speech that truly left the audience in stitches.
While accepting the coveted award, the iconic punk rock band, fronted by Billie Joe Armstrong, opted for an unexpected twist—quoting a memorable scene from the 1997 dramedy Boogie Nights.
As Armstrong, along with bandmates Tré Cool and Mike Dirnt, stood on stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Armstrong delivered a speech that had fans buzzing.
“I don’t know what to say. I guess the only thing I can say is that I’ll keep rockin’ and rollin’, keep making music, and better songs,” Armstrong began, quoting Mark Wahlberg’s character, Dirk Diggler, from Boogie Nights. His attempt to keep a straight face was met with chuckles from Cool and Dirnt, who struggled to hold back their laughter.
Armstrong continued in true Boogie Nights style: “You know, it seems we make these records and sometimes they’re considered filthy by some people. But I don’t think that’s true.
The music we make can make people feel better. They can help, they really can, I believe that. We can always do better. I’m gonna keep tryin’ if you keep tryin’. Let’s keep rockin’ and rollin’.”
For those familiar with the Boogie Nights scene, it was a perfect homage. Wahlberg’s character in the film delivers almost the exact same lines while accepting an award, which Armstrong and the band recreated with their signature irreverence.
The band shared the hilarious moment with fans by posting a side-by-side video of their speech and the original Boogie Nights clip on Instagram, alongside the caption: “ALTERNATIVE ARTIST OF THE YEAR!!! @iheartradio. I guess the only thing we can say is… we promise to keep rocking and rolling and keep making music and better songs .”
Fans of the band immediately took to social media, celebrating the hilarious and unmistakably Green Day moment. “The most unserious band ever (ILY GUYS),” one fan commented, while another said, “The lack of seriousness in you three is probably my favorite thing .”
“I didn’t get the Boogie Nights reference at first, but now it makes so much sense ,” wrote one amused follower. It was a lighthearted moment that truly captured Green Day’s unique and playful spirit.
The band, who were also nominated for Alternative Song of the Year for “Dilemma” and Rock Artist of the Year, added to their growing legacy at the awards. Last year, they received the Landmark Award and performed a medley of Saviors and Dookie hits, thrilling fans with their iconic tracks.
Green Day continues to keep fans laughing and rocking out, proving that their musical journey is as entertaining as ever.
