Eminem‘s team has spoken out after a former employee, Joseph Strange, was charged with leaking over 25 unreleased songs. Strange, who worked at Eminem’s Ferndale studio from 2007 to 2021, faces charges for copyright infringement and interstate transportation of stolen goods. The leaked songs, created between 1999 and 2018, were sold online without Eminem’s consent.
Eminem’s spokesperson, Dennis Dennehy, expressed gratitude for the FBI’s investigation, stating that the damage to Eminem’s artistic legacy is immense. “The significant damage caused by a trusted employee to Eminem’s artistic legacy and creative integrity cannot be overstated,” Dennehy said. Strange’s attorney described the charges as “untested allegations” yet to be vetted by a court.
The FBI investigation began after studio employees discovered the unreleased music online. They identified an image taken from a studio hard drive, leading them to Strange. Authorities seized evidence from his home, including hard drives and handwritten lyric sheets.
Strange faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. Acting U.S. Attorney Julie Beck emphasized the importance of protecting intellectual property from theft. Eminem’s team will continue to defend his art against unauthorized leaks.
The leak has divided Eminem’s fanbase, with some appreciating the insight into his creative process and others respecting his disdain for leaks. Eminem’s history with leaks has been tumultuous, with past albums disrupted by unauthorized releases.
Strange’s case highlights the ongoing battle against music leaks, which can significantly impact artists’ careers and financial stability. As Eminem’s team continues to protect his work, fans remain divided on whether to engage with the leaked material.
