Keke Palmer is opening up like never before in her new song “My Confession,” released on May 9. The track takes fans behind the scenes of the viral Usher moment in Las Vegas, which played a part in her breakup with ex-boyfriend Darius Jackson.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Palmer explained that the song is about giving voice to the feelings she had kept inside. “Sometimes the closure we need doesn’t come from a conversation — it comes from being honest with ourselves. That’s what this song is. My peace. My clarity. My way of letting go,” she shared with her followers.
The song reflects on the Las Vegas concert from July 2023, where Palmer danced with Usher. In the lyrics, she sings, “Summer ’23, we was in Vegas, right / Broke up with me and you hopped up on a flight.” Palmer claims that by the time of the viral moment, she and Jackson had already broken up, despite his public disapproval of her outfit.
The song also addresses Jackson’s controversial response to the video of Palmer and Usher, where he criticized her outfit by posting, “It’s the outfit tho… you a mom.” Palmer hits back in the chorus with the powerful line, “F— your projections, These are my confessions.”
In the second verse, Palmer touches on the tension between Jackson and his family, and the backlash he faced online. “72-hours, now your feelings hurt / My fans was dragging you because you had the nerve,” she sings, adding that the public’s reaction made things even more difficult.
Palmer, who has been candid about her emotional journey since the incident, said the song was a way for her to find peace. “I’m not here to play perfect. I’m here to be honest. I’m just here to be Keke,” she wrote.
While the incident stirred up drama online, Usher later called it a “pop moment” and said he hoped everyone had fun with it. “It was a conversation of what was going on with us having fun,” he said, reflecting on the lighthearted nature of the Las Vegas show.
Keke Palmer has continued to speak about the incident and its impact on her life, sharing that the aftermath of the breakup has been difficult, but that she is now co-parenting peacefully with Jackson.
