Vet Linked To Viral Horse Abuse Video Found Dead In Lake Mead

The veterinary world was rocked by a viral controversy that quickly spiraled into a tragic celebrity-like scandal.

Dr. Shawn Frehner, a well-known Nevada veterinarian, was thrust into the national spotlight after a video allegedly showing him kicking a horse began circulating widely on social media in early April. Just days later, he vanished, prompting an intensive search near Las Vegas.

On April 18, Frehner’s body was discovered near the Boulder Islands at Lake Mead. Authorities confirmed that the 56-year-old veterinarian died by drowning, with the animal euthanasia drug Pentobarbital contributing to his death.

The coroner officially ruled it a suicide, according to multiple outlets including KTNV and the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Dr. Frehner’s name became a trending topic online after the now-infamous video surfaced. The incident allegedly took place while Frehner was administering anesthesia to horses at a ranch about 60 miles west of Las Vegas.

Shawna Gonzalez, the property owner, accused Frehner of violently kicking and choking one of the horses. “He wrapped the horse around his neck three times, and he kicked him in the head,” she told reporters. The injured horse reportedly suffered abrasions to the skull.

The footage sparked widespread outrage, with animal rights advocates and social media users calling for justice. Gonzalez pushed for animal cruelty charges, prompting the Nye County Sheriff’s Office to launch a criminal investigation.

In response to the viral backlash, Frehner took to social media in a final attempt to defend his actions. “I did not blatantly haul off and kick this horse as it appears in the video,” he said, adding that his actions were an attempt to reposition the horse to administer anesthesia more effectively.

However, public sentiment continued to spiral. Nearly two weeks after he was reported missing, search teams located Frehner’s abandoned truck near Lake Mead, with his phone, keys, and wallet left behind. His body was found shortly afterward.

The case has left both the veterinary community and animal welfare activists stunned. Gonzalez, who initiated the complaint, expressed sorrow over Frehner’s death, stating: “I had no idea this would happen… But I was not the one bullying. I am not sorry for standing up for my horse. I am their voice and will continue to be.”

The disturbing saga highlights the pressure that can mount when private actions become public scandals. The blend of viral attention, criminal investigation, and tragic outcome has turned the incident into a sobering celebrity-level cautionary tale about accountability, public scrutiny, and mental health.
