Keke Palmer is reflecting on her early days in the entertainment industry. The 31-year-old Emmy winner opened up in a recent interview with The Cut, revealing that during her time on Nickelodeon, she felt she wasn’t included in the same conversations as stars like Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, and Victoria Justice.

Despite the success of her show True Jackson, VP, Palmer felt limited by the perception that she was “the Black girl” on the network, sharing that she wasn’t seen in the same way as her peers. She likened the feeling to being the only Black child in her class at her private school in Illinois.

Over the years, Palmer’s perspective has evolved. “I don’t compare myself to anyone,” she stated, adding, “But I definitely don’t compare myself to any White person.”

Having worked across both Nickelodeon and Disney Channel, Palmer also shared insights on the distinct cultures at each network, noting that while Disney created an immersive, magical experience, Nickelodeon had a more straightforward, work-focused environment.
