Usher Reveals Why He Didn’t Join Jennifer Hudson In Dreamgirls

by Coco

On February 4, 2025, Usher appeared on The Jennifer Hudson Show and surprised the audience when he revealed he almost starred in Dreamgirls alongside Jennifer Hudson. Hudson, 43, was unaware that Usher, 46, had been set to join the cast. The My Way singer explained that while he was excited for the project, a scheduling conflict caused him to miss out on the role.

“I tried my hardest to make it work, but it just didn’t fit,” Usher said, expressing regret over missing the chance to be part of the film. Although Usher didn’t specify the character he was meant to play, reports from 2005 suggest he was slated to portray C.C. White, Effie’s brother, a role eventually filled by Keith Robinson.

Hudson, who won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Effie White, was taken aback by this revelation. “Wait, you were going to be in Dreamgirls?” she exclaimed. Usher shared his admiration for Hudson, adding that even though he didn’t appear in the movie, he felt connected to its legacy because of her outstanding performance.

As the conversation unfolded, Hudson playfully suggested a duet as a future collaboration, and Usher eagerly agreed. Despite missing out on the iconic musical, it seems fans may soon get to see these two stars unite musically!
