In a new interview with Variety, the rapper opened up about how his felony assault trial made it hard for him to make music. The case had been hanging over him for years after a fight in 2021 led to serious charges.
“It’s odd because as I get older, I’m more conscious about how I view myself,” Rocky said.
He explained that writing songs has become harder because he wants to sound more “humble” and “relatable.”
“Describing my life sounds very braggadocious,” he added. “And I want to figure out how to say it where it feels more sincere, as opposed to just sh—ing on the next person or making the next person feel down — or just evoking negative s— out of people.”
When asked if the trial inspired any of his new lyrics, Rocky didn’t hold back.
“I’m writing about these past four or five years that I had this over me, and it’s been kind of handicapping me,” he admitted.
He also said the experience gave him trust issues.
“I can’t necessarily blame it on my last situation,” he said. “But what I did learn is you’ve gotta accept that everybody’s not good people; you’re not gonna run into a solid person every time. Not everybody’s gonna handle situations like you.”
Rocky was found not guilty back in February after being accused of shooting at his former friend A$AP Relli during an argument in 2021. He had been facing up to 24 years in prison.
When the verdict was read, Rocky broke down. He jumped over the courtroom barrier to hug his mom, sister, and Rihanna. He looked at the jury and said, “Thank y’all for saving my life. Thank y’all for making the right decision.”
He had even turned down a plea deal, choosing to go to trial and fight for his freedom.
Now, with the trial behind him, Rocky is focused on family. Just hours before this interview came out, Rihanna showed off her baby bump at the 2025 Met Gala, confirming they’re expecting their third child.
A source close to the couple said they’re spending more time together at home. “They’re focused on family time,” the source told PEOPLE.
Between a growing family and new music on the way, it looks like A$AP Rocky is finally in a better place.
